There has been encouraging news coming from AFT about Summer, PBC. This is a fantastic free service for all of our members interested in student loan forgiveness:
Loan Forgivness Program
AFT members have access to Summer, PBC - an online resource, started by student loan borrowers who wanted to help others avoid bad information and bad actors in the student loan market. Summer harnesses the expertise of public policy experts to optimize borrower options, and it uses technology to make the process easy and secure. The AFT trusts Summer to help our members navigate the student loan repayment landscape.
For more info about how you can save with Summer, visit aft.org/benefits/summer.
For a more detailed overview of how to get started, read the message below from AFT’s Chris Goff. Chris has helped several of our fellow CTA members get enrolled in the Summer program over the last several weeks. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program has been very challenging for many to navigate over the last several years, and we hope all members who are eligible can take advantage of this great program!
As a member of the Cranston Teachers’ Alliance and the American Federation of Teachers you have access to a free member benefit called Summer, which is an on-line student loan management platform that can help you assess your eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, help you apply for the program, and create a personalized checklist based on your own student loans and goals to reach that forgiveness. You can even schedule a consultation with a member of their borrower success team to discuss all of your options to ensure that you understand the steps in front of you before committing to any course of action.
We know that people need support in staying on top of all their loan paperwork – more support than we could possibly provide through my small department – and we’ve heard from members who’ve used it that Summer makes the whole process comprehensible, easy, and a lot less stressful!
To enroll, you’ll need to create a free AFT member benefits account, which you can do here (the “Create an AFT Account” option is the last button on the screen): https://members.aft.org/members/login. You’ll need your AFT Member ID Number to create the account – the “What’s My Member Number” tool is also on the same page where you’ll create the account, or you can look it up here: https://members.aft.org/members/lookup. If you have any issues creating an account or finding your member ID number, please let me know.
Once you’ve successfully created the account, log in, go to the Members Only Benefits area, and click on the link to “start saving on student debt.” This will take you to Summer.
Once you’re into Summer, you’ll be asked some simple questions to determine your eligibility (the information at this stage just needs to be your best guess – it’s not the official numbers yet). Then you’ll be given instructions to download your Federal Student Aid information from studentaid.gov at which point Summer will start guiding you through the application process. It sounds complicated, but as I said, our members who use it find it super easy and helpful, and I hope you will too!
