What is the role of the union? The Cranston Teachers' Alliance is the exclusive collective bargaining agent for Cranston’s teachers, other non-administrative professional employees, bus aides and paraprofessionals.

What are the primary responsibilites of my union? -Negotiate and enforce the contract -Provide the best education we can for the system’s students -Represent the membership in all matters related to their professional work -Advocate for racial, social and economic justice -Answer job-related questions and assist in any job-related matter -Promote the growth of — and respect for — our profession -Work with the community to ensure our schools are the best as they can be -Promote the strengthening of public education -Work to ensure adequate funding to support improvements in public education -Work to elect pro-public education, pro-union candidates

What else does the CTA do? We sponsor a range of social and charitable events including: -A variety of social get togethers, at the beginning, mid, and end of year including a reception for new staff and a reception for new teachers, paraprofessionals in the Fall. -We organize around a variety of issues that impact our members, students, and school communities. Administer scholarships to CPS students. -Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team CTA paint night CTA members’ holiday party CTA 30 week dinner dance

What is the leadership structure of the union? The CTA’s policy board is its Executive Board, served by 10 members, including 4 elected officers. Serving as a direct link between the union office and the membership are elected CTA Building Representatives from every building and program in the city. Building Reps are elected each year to service the members at each school site and act as the liaisons between the union office and our membership in our schools.

If I have a question about the contract, my rights, or the like, whom do I call? Before you call, ask your Building Representative. He or she represents the union in your school and has generally had experience in many of the matters that affect each of us. If you still need help with questions perataining to contract implementation, payroll problems, possible grievances, and the like should be directed to the union office. Leave a message with your name and issue and someone will get back to you as promptly as possible.

What about class size? Any elementary teacher in grades Kindergarten through Grade 2 who is assigned 23 or more students, any elementary teacher in Grade 3 who is assigned 26 or more students, and any elementary teacher in Grades 4 and 5 who is assigned 28 or more students, and any secondary teacher, except those enumerated in Section 2 below, who is assigned 31 or more students, shall receive additional compensation according to the following formulae: 1. Elementary teachers' compensation shall be determined by dividing the top step of the salary scale plus a Master's Degree increment by 180 days, dividing that daily rate by the class maximum, multiplying that dollar amount by the number of students over the maximum, multiplied by the number of days, or portion thereof, that the maximum has been exceeded. 2. In the high schools, high school teachers, except ensemble teachers, shall be compensated for each additional student by determining the top step of the salary scale plus a Master's Degree increment and dividing it by 180 days: dividing that amount by 3 and dividing that amount by the class maximum: multiplying that amount by the number of students assigned in excess of the maximum in any class and multiplying that amount by the number of days that the maximum has been exceeded. 3. In the middle schools, middle school teachers, except ensemble teachers and chorus teachers, shall be compensated for each additional student by determining the top step of the salary scale plus a Master's Degree increment and dividing it by 180 days: dividing that amount by 5 and dividing that amount by the class maximum: multiplying that amount by the number of students assigned in excess of the maximum in any class and multiplying that amount by the number of days that the maximum has been exceeded
